Jazz collaborates with Huawei to accelerate its network digitisation
Jazz
Jazz, Pakistan’s leading digital operator, has entered into a strategic partnership with Huawei to accelerate its network digitization efforts using the WISDOM (WizTech, Innovative, Service assurance, Diversification, Operation Excellence & Mobile Money) framework, said a press release.
The partnership entails Huawei implementing the WISDOM framework, a comprehensive approach aimed at boosting digital maturity and stimulating innovation within the organization. Huawei will assess Jazz’s current network components using industry standards, aiming to pinpoint immediate accomplishments through the identification of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). By incorporating the WISDOM principles, Jazz aims to maintain a leading position in the ever-evolving telecom industry.
Jazz recently partnered with Huawei to elevate its long-haul network to a groundbreaking 400G per wavelength capacity with the deployment of C+L band systems. Previously, Jazz introduced industry-leading Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) and JazzFi (WiFi calling service) to elevate customer experience, gaining over 22 million and 3 million customers respectively in record time.
巴基斯坦领先的数字运营商Jazz与华为建立了战略合作伙伴关系,利用WISDOM(WizTech、Innovative、Service assurance、Diversification、Operation Excellence & Mobile Money)框架加快网络数字化进程。
SIFC to push ahead with plan to develop chip industry
The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has geared up to press ahead with the plan of developing a multibillion-dollar chip design and semiconductor industry in Pakistan.
Sources told The Express Tribune that the government would be required to provide tax incentives and other facilitating programmes to foreign companies, especially Chinese and US investors, to encourage them to set up chip designing centres in Pakistan.
Initial work on developing the chip and semiconductor industry kicked off in 2022. The government at that time formulated the Pakistan National Semiconductor Plan that laid down opportunities, challenges and recommendations.
It noted that Pakistani universities were not producing trained graduates who could work on designing chips. This can be addressed by setting up advanced training centres that will bridge the gap between the academia and the industry.
Also, the government does not offer any incentive plan to encourage chip designing companies to install such facilities. It recommended the resolution of the issue by offering world-class incentives that could help bring US and Chinese companies to Pakistan.
Trade gap with nine regional states widens
Pakistan’s trade deficit with the nine regional countries widened by 10.98 per cent to $5.415 billion in the first eight months of the current fiscal year from $4.879bn over the corresponding period of last year.
The trade deficit is mainly driven by an increase in imports from China and India during the period under review. Exports to regional countries, particularly China increased over the review period but exports to other regional countries remained negative, according to data compiled by the State Bank.
In absolute terms, the value of Pakistan’s exports to the nine regional countries — Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Iran, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives — rose 20.58pc to $2.911bn between July and February 2023-24 from $2.414bn over the corresponding months of last year.
Pakistan’s bulk of the regional exports, which accounts for over 60pc, go to China while the rest to the remaining eight countries.
Exports to China increased 42pc to $1.895bn in July-February FY24 from $1.334bn over the corresponding period last year. In FY23, the exports to China declined 27.3pc to $2.02bn from $2.78bn in FY22.
CCP set to strengthen ties with China’s SAMR
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) is poised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), marking a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation.
China has made significant investments in Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and various Chinese companies operating in the country. This investment is expected to increase manifold after the second stage of CPEC. To facilitate these expanding business activities, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) is preparing to put in place a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework.
The signing of the MoU is expected to usher in a new era of collaboration between China and Pakistan in the field of anti-trust. The MoU will solidify the partnership between CCP and SAMR by establishing a framework for enhanced cooperation through bilateral meetings, training programmes, workshops, research collaborations, experience sharing, exchange of information, and cooperation in the field of competition law and policy.
